Data-visualization of restaurant technology adoption: bar charts and donut charts on a warm restaurant counter, illustrating 2026 software usage statistics

Most "restaurant tech market share" numbers come from vendor press releases. We took a different route: we scanned the public websites of 238,000+ US restaurants and detected which software they actually run. After removing duplicate and non-US records, that represents 71,000+ unique US restaurant locations. This is what the data shows as of September 2026.

30-Second Read

Of the 71,000+ unique US restaurant locations we analyzed, we could detect at least one technology vendor on 9,000+ of them. Among those locations:

  • Toast is the dominant POS at 41.8% - more than double its nearest competitor, Square (17.4%).
  • Third-party delivery is everywhere: DoorDash (17.1%) and Uber Eats (11.7%) appear on roughly one in six locations.
  • OpenTable still leads reservations at 15.2%, with Resy second at 9.0%.
  • The "long tail" is real: outside the top five vendors per category, adoption drops off fast.

All percentages below are the share of the 9,000+ locations where we detected technology - not all 71,000+ - and reflect what is publicly detectable from a restaurant's own website.

Methodology

We scanned the live websites of 238,000+ US restaurants across all 50 states plus DC and deduplicated them to 71,239 unique locations - the largest samples coming from CA (9,665), FL (3,257), TX (3,222), WA (2,562), VA (2,561), and NY (2,414). For each site we looked for public signals of the POS, online ordering, delivery, and reservation tools in use (embedded widgets, booking links, ordering buttons, and platform scripts).

Two corrections make this edition more honest than our earlier scan counts. First, deduplication: chains and directories generate many near-identical pages, so multiple scanned rows often describe the same venue; we collapsed them into one location each. Second, geography: 54,000+ scanned rows pointed outside the US and another 22,000+ had no verifiable country, so they are excluded from the US counts above.

We detected at least one vendor on 8,962 of the 71,239 US locations (12.6%). The rest either run software with no public website fingerprint or had no detectable integration. So treat these as adoption among locations with a detectable tech stack, which skews toward operators investing in online presence. It is a floor, not a ceiling. Note also that "detected" means a fingerprint on the public website - it is evidence of the software a venue runs, not a verified install.

Point-of-sale (POS) market share

POS is the backbone of a restaurant's stack, and the data shows a clear leader.

POS Locations Share of locations with detected tech
Toast 3,748 41.8%
Square 1,558 17.4%
SpotOn 319 3.6%
Clover 275 3.1%
Lightspeed 3 0.03%

Toast appears on more than four in ten locations where we detected a POS-class tool - a commanding lead. Square is a clear second, favored by smaller and newer operators. Online ordering and delivery

Third-party marketplaces dominate visible online ordering, but commission-free direct ordering shows up too.

Platform Locations Share Type
DoorDash 1,536 17.1% Marketplace
Uber Eats 1,045 11.7% Marketplace
Grubhub 703 7.8% Marketplace
ChowNow 444 5.0% Direct ordering
Olo 570 6.4% Ordering infrastructure

The takeaway for operators: marketplace delivery is nearly universal, but it comes with 15-30% commissions. The presence of ChowNow on 5.0% of locations shows a meaningful slice already pursuing commission-free online ordering and delivery.

Reservations and guest management

Reservation platform Locations Share
OpenTable 1,359 15.2%
Resy 803 9.0%
Tock 277 3.1%
SevenRooms 80 0.9%

OpenTable remains the default, but Resy has built a serious second position. For full-service restaurants comparing the two, see our OpenTable alternatives and reservation systems breakdowns.

What this means for operators

  1. Toast's lead is structural, not hype. At 41.8% detected adoption it is the safe default - but "default" is not the same as "best for you," which is why commission structure, hardware cost, and contract terms still decide the right pick.
  2. You are probably paying delivery commissions. With DoorDash and Uber Eats on ~17.1% and ~11.7% of locations, most operators have marketplace exposure. Direct ordering (ChowNow, Olo) is the lever to claw margin back.
  3. The tools that win are the ones that integrate. The top vendors in each category are the ones that plug into each other - POS, ordering, reservations, and analytics in one connected stack.
