What is Tock?

Tock is a reservation, table management, and experiences platform launched in 2014 that pioneered prepaid, ticketed dining - guests book and pay for dinner the way they would buy theater tickets, which is why it became the system of choice for fine-dining restaurants, tasting menus, and roughly 1,200 wineries among its ~8,000 bookable venues. It charges a flat monthly subscription with no per-cover fees, and restaurants own their guest data.

Important: American Express bought Tock from Squarespace for $400 million in 2024, and in February 2026 announced it is folding Tock into sister platform Resy - the consumer-facing Tock app and website are being sunset in summer 2026, while the restaurant-facing software continues to operate under Resy branding, with a full merge of the two systems expected in 2027. New buyers are effectively choosing between "Powered by Tock" and "Powered by Resy" plans on a single pricing page today.

Tock pros and cons

Pros

  • +Prepayments and deposits demonstrably reduce no-shows and protect revenue - the recurring theme in operator reviews and testimonials (e.g., selling event tickets right alongside reservations).
  • +Easy for staff to learn and for guests to book; Capterra reviewers call it straightforward and 'best in class in a field of mediocre reservation systems' for innovation.
  • +Flat monthly rate with no per-cover fees (unlike OpenTable's classic model), and restaurants keep ownership of their guest data.

Cons

  • −Weak value-for-money perception on Capterra: 3.4/5 overall from 17 reviews with value-for-money at just 2.7/5, with complaints about high transaction fees and aggressive upselling.
  • −Multiple reviewers report sales misrepresentation - features or integrations (e.g., Toast) pitched as included, then not working as demonstrated or locked behind higher tiers after signing; some describe it as 'bait and switch'.
  • −Support and UX gripes: email-only support on lower tiers, buggy features slow to get fixed, convoluted handling of large parties/overbooking, and no visual alert when a new reservation lands during a busy service.

Top Tock alternatives

Resy

Tock's sister platform under American Express and its de facto successor - Tock's consumer bookings move to Resy's 25,000-venue app in summer 2026, so new venues wanting the Amex/Resy diner network can start there directly with subscription pricing and no cover fees.

OpenTable

The market leader with 60,000+ restaurants and the largest diner discovery network - better if filling seats through consumer reach matters more than prepaid ticketing.

SevenRooms

Stronger CRM, marketing automation, and operations suite for restaurant groups and hotels; acquired by DoorDash for $1.2 billion, which adds delivery-linked demand generation.

Tock FAQ

How much does Tock cost?

As of July 2026, Tock's pricing page lists Essential at $269/month with a 3% fee on prepayments and Premium at $399/month with a 2% fee on prepayments, plus two Resy-powered plans: Platform at $249/month and Platform 360 at $399/month. Standard payment processing fees apply on all plans, and there are no per-cover fees.

Is Tock shutting down?

The Tock brand is being retired, but the software is not disappearing. American Express (owner since 2024) announced in February 2026 that Tock is merging into Resy: the consumer Tock app and website go dark in summer 2026 as all venues move to Resy's app, while restaurants keep using Tock's back-of-house software under Resy branding, with a combined system expected in 2027.

What is Tock best for?

Fine-dining restaurants, wineries, hotels, and any venue selling experiences - tasting menus, chef's counters, wine tastings, classes, and ticketed events. Its signature strength is prepaid and deposit-backed reservations that nearly eliminate no-shows, which is why Michelin-starred operators like Blue Hill at Stone Barns run on it.

What are the main alternatives to Tock?

Resy (its Amex sister platform and where Tock bookings are migrating), OpenTable (largest diner network at 60,000+ restaurants), and SevenRooms (deeper CRM and marketing automation, now owned by DoorDash). Toast Tables is another option for venues already on Toast POS.
